SUMMARY:Crash Course: How to Take an Oral History
DESCRIPTION:Join historian Jon Hunner\, interim director of the New Mexico History Museum\, and curator Meredith Davidson for an exclusive workshop on gathering and archiving oral histories. This free\, introductory course will be offered twice\, from 10 am to noon on Wednesday\, July 23\, in the Meem Community Room. The class will be repeated from 1 to 3 pm on Thursday\, Aug. 14\, in the History Museum classroom. \nSpace is limited\, so please RSVP to Tomas Jaehn at tomas.jaehn@state.nm.us to reserve a seat. \nOral histories have long been used by scholars and museums to help paint a more detailed picture of the lives of particular people and eras. But families\, neighborhoods and institutions hoping to pass on their stories can also learn to capture important voices via oral histories before they fade away. While the famous faces celebrated throughout history typically see their words preserved\, we all have important stories to tell. Efforts to capture the “everyman” tales each of us carries is a more recent pursuit—and historians can use some help catching up. Tales of summer camp\, local merchants\, reactions to national events—each of these helps historians\, genealogists\, and loved ones. \nParticipants in these workshops will explore how to conduct background research on interviewees\, create a list of questions\, develop interview techniques\, secure release forms\, work with voice recorders\, and archive the interviews. A future Crash Course this fall will discuss what to do once you have conducted an oral history. \n

SUMMARY:Pueblo Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:Free admission.  \nCome join us for our 11th Annual commemoration of Pueblo Independence Day. On August 10\, 1680—the Pueblo People of New Mexico—aided by Apache and Navajo allies—launched a successful rebellion against Spanish colonization. Commemorative activities will begin with a pilgrimage run from Walatowa plaza in Jemez Pueblo to Giusewa Pueblo kiva at Jemez Historic Site (approximately a half marathon or 13 miles). Participating in this run\, or supporting a runner\, is a way to pay tribute to the Ancestors and show appreciation for the sacrifices they made. Their brave resistance helped preserve the Pueblo way of life: our culture\, our languages and our right to one day reclaim our aboriginal lands. The run begins at 7:00 AM\, and the general public is welcome to participate. Volunteers will provide water stations at one mile intervals\, and a shuttle service for slow runners will be available. At 10:00 AM\, guest speakers will welcome all the runners and their sponsors to the monument. The following festivities\, between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM\, will feature: Jemez traditional dances and Native American flute music. There will also be authentic Native arts & crafts and Native food. There is no admission fee for any of the activities related to this event.  \nFor info: 575-829-3530.

DESCRIPTION:California pinhole artist Peggy Ann Jones speaks in the History Museum auditorium on “Pinhole to Pixel” and what happens to the creative potential of photography when the artist designs and constructs the camera. Basic concepts of the photographic process led Jones to visually comment on principles of photography and traditionally accepted modes of photographic production. Her photos and cameras are included in Poetics of Light: Pinhole Photography. Free. \nJones is an assistant professor at MiraCosta College in Oceanside\, Calif. She has participated in solo and group shows throughout Europe and the United States. Her work is held by the University of New Mexico; Bibliotheque Nationale\, Department des Estampes et de la Photographie\, in Paris\, France; and the Laguna Beach Museum\, in Laguna Beach\, Calif. DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, one of the History Museum’s favorite groups\, Schola Cantorum Santa Fe\, performs “Echoes of Mary\,” seldom-heard sacred music dedicated to Mary from the cathedrals of Mexico City and Cuba to the capillas of northern New Mexico. Part of the programming series for Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World. Free with admission; Sundays free to NM residents and children 16 and under are free daily. \n \nDownload a high-resolution image of the group by clicking here. \n \nThe Schola Cantorum of Santa Fe was founded in 1990 by Dr. Billy Turney during his 25-year tenure as principal organist and Director of Music of Cathedral of Saint Francis in Santa Fe. Turney is a Santa Fe native and began his music studies with the Sisters of the Loretto Academy at a young age. He experienced the Sisters singing the chants of Vespers in the Loretto Chapel\, an experience that helped shape his sacred music career. Turney studied Gregorian chant and polyphonic music of the Renaissance in Rome at the prestigious Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music\, and has the unique perspective of presenting this special sacred music in its’ intended context and environment. \n \nSchola completed a 10-day performance tour of Italy in early 2013\, presenting sacred music concerts and sharing its music ministry at the Benedictine Monasteries of Subiaco and Monte Casino\, the Basilicas of Saint Anthony in Padua\, Saint Mark in Venice\, Holy Trinity in Florence and Saint Ignatius in Rome\, and the Papal Basilicas of Saint Francis in Assisi\, Saint Mary Major in Rome and Saint Peter in the Vatican. The tour culminated with Schola joining the Sistine Chapel Choir for the singing of a Papal Mass on the Feast of the Ephipany in Saint Peter’s Basilica. Schola’s maestro also had the distinct honor of playing the pipe organ for liturgies in the Basilicas of Saint Anthony in Padua\, Saint Francis in Assisi and Saint Peter’s at the Vatican. \n \nSchola is heading to Ireland in 2015 for its’ 25th anniversary. Performances in Dublin\, Armagh and Galway are on the performance tour. Schola will have a workshop in Dublin with Michael McGlynn\, composer of music for Riverdance and director of Ireland’s National Choir\, Anúna. \n

Which tucked-away building held a Manhattan Project secret? \nFind out by taking a Downtown Walking Tour led by New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors guides. The tours resume on April 14(through Oct. 11)\, Monday-Saturday\, beginning at 10:15 a.m. Gather at the Palace Courtyard’s Blue Gate just south of the History Museum entrance at 113 Lincoln Ave. Cost is $10. Children 16 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Museum guides do not accept tips. (No tours are offered on the Saturdays when large events are held on the Plaza\, such as Spanish Market and Santa Fe Fiesta.) \nEach tour lasts about 2 hours and features a leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Enjoy stories of the people and events that have made Santa Fe a world-class tourist destination. Los Compadres del Palacio\, a support group of the New Mexico History Museum\, operates the program with guides who are trained in Santa Fe history. DESCRIPTION:After Pancho Villa’s March 9\, 1916\, attack on Columbus\, NM\, Gen. John J. Pershing launched a Punitive Expedition with one goal: Get Villa. Given his failure to do so\, Pershing’s effort could easily be chalked up as a military failure. But its long-term impact was significant. The surge into Mexico provided valuable training for Pershing and for New Mexico troops who would all too soon enter World War I. \nAs centenary commemorations for “The Great War” begin across the globe\, the History Museum’s interim director\, Jon Hunner\, will speak on “World War I and New Mexico” at noon on Wednesday\, July 30. This free lecture will be in the Meem Community Room; enter through the museum’s Washington Avenue doors. \nHunner is a New Mexico State University professor of history on loan to the museum. His areas of expertise include 20th-century New Mexico and the Manhattan Project. \nOn June 28\, 1914\, Archduke Franz Ferdinand\, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire\, was assassinated in Sarajevo\, along with his wife. A month later\, Emperor Franz Joseph declared war on Serbia; Russia\, Serbia’s ally\, immediately mobilized its forces. By Aug. 1\, Germany had declared war on Russia\, and the dominoes began to fall. The United States entered the war on April 6\, 1917. Armistice was achieved on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918—today commemorated as Veteran’s Day. \nWhat roles did New Mexico play in the conflict and what impact did the war have on our state? What was the Zimmerman telegram and how did it speed America’s entry into the war? Hunner will explore how events in distant lands affected the New Mexicans who served\, including the many men who gave their lives\, and how those events transformed the nation’s second-youngest state.

SUMMARY:Crash Course: How to Take an Oral History
DESCRIPTION:Join historian Jon Hunner\, interim director of the New Mexico History Museum\, and curator Meredith Davidson for an exclusive workshop on gathering and archiving oral histories. This free\, introductory course will be offered twice\, from 10 am to noon on Wednesday\, July 23\, in the Meem Community Room. The class will be repeated from 1 to 3 pm on Thursday\, Aug. 14\, in the History Museum classroom. \nSpace is limited\, so please RSVP to Tomas Jaehn at tomas.jaehn@state.nm.us to reserve a seat. \nOral histories have long been used by scholars and museums to help paint a more detailed picture of the lives of particular people and eras. But families\, neighborhoods and institutions hoping to pass on their stories can also learn to capture important voices via oral histories before they fade away. While the famous faces celebrated throughout history typically see their words preserved\, we all have important stories to tell. Efforts to capture the “everyman” tales each of us carries is a more recent pursuit—and historians can use some help catching up. Tales of summer camp\, local merchants\, reactions to national events—each of these helps historians\, genealogists\, and loved ones. \nParticipants in these workshops will explore how to conduct background research on interviewees\, create a list of questions\, develop interview techniques\, secure release forms\, work with voice recorders\, and archive the interviews. A future Crash Course this fall will discuss what to do once you have conducted an oral history. \n

SUMMARY:Make a Camera Obscura A hands-on workshop for Poetics of Light: Pinhole Photography
DESCRIPTION:Join Santa Fe educator\, photographer and camera obscura developer Jackie Mathey for a family workshop on building a take-home tabletop camera obscura that can be used as drawing aids. Explore how light moves and images are formed. Travel in your imagination to the age of the Renaissance where devices like these were used by artists. It’s free\, but class size is limited; make a reservation by calling 505-476-5087. \nMathey has taught at the Santa Fe Photo Workshops and started a photography department at a local high school based solely on pinhole photography.
