SUMMARY:‘From Horseshoes to Hinges’ – The art of Blacksmithing
DESCRIPTION:The blacksmith was the mechanic\, hardware store and fabricator of all things metal needed for the soldier and civilian alike surviving in a remote and hostile land.  The blacksmith fabricated things like farm tools\, house hardware and accessories repaired wagons as well as shod work animals and fabricated the metal tools you needed to get by. \nThe skilled work of masters Hopper Shannon and José “Pep” Gómez will demonstrate the art of the Blacksmith with two working forges.  Visitors will experience displays of fire and glowing metal accompanied by the ring of hammer on iron as raw metal is transformed into functional forms. \nThe Blacksmiths:  \nBob ‘Hopper’ Shannon – A self-taught smithy who started up Diamondback Forge in 1990.  Hopper specializes in 17th and 18th century Spanish colonial ironware.  His work is currently on display in five museums in the U.S. and two in Germany.  \nJosé “Pep” Gómez – Is currently an instructor and tenured Assistant Professor of Welding Technology at the Dona Ana Community College.  Gómez has been a member of the Southwest Artists Blacksmiths\, Arizona Artists Blacksmiths\, and Borderland Artists Blacksmiths Association for several years. He also owns and operates “Lost Arts Forge and Metal Works” where he specializes in restoring and rebuilding heavy equipment\, forging one-off parts and tooling\, the forging of pattern welded items\, and welding fabrication and repair of all things metal.

DESCRIPTION:This recently-released documentary (120 mins. Spanish/English) tells the story of the Wixarika or Huicholes people – one of the most intact precolonial groups remaining in the Americas – and their struggle against both the Mexican government and the multinational mining corporations to preserve Wirikuta\, their sacred lands\, against mineral extraction. \nThis film highlights the global debate pitting ancient cultural values\, the exploration of nature\, and the inevitable development of the peoples against promises from the multinationals to create jobs and wealth for the people without contamination. \nThe mining is seen by the Wixarika and their supporters as a menace to the delicate biodiversity of this unique ecosystem\, liested by the UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site\, and a very real threat to their spiritual traditions and culture. \nPlease note film director Hernan Vichez will be accompanied by two Huichol Shamans in the film for a Q&A following each session. \nAdmission to the film is free with museum admission.

DESCRIPTION:What if everything we thought we knew about Billy the Kid was wrong? \nAuthor\, Frederick Nolan\, to speak at Lincoln Historic Site on Nov. 11th \nHistorian and foremost Lincoln County War and Billy the Kid author\, Frederick Nolan\, will be at Lincoln Historic Site on November 11\, 2014 as a part of Lincoln Historic Site’s Historian-in-Residence program. Sponsored by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation\, Mr. Nolan will give a talk on his original research and recent discoveries into the origins of the famed Lincoln County outlaw. \nMore than fifty years ago\, amateur historians Robert N. Mullin and Philip J. Rasch published their finding of the marriage record of Billy’s mother Catherine McCarty and William H. Antrim who\, on an April day in 1873 were pronounced man and wife at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe\, N.M. \nApart from the minister\, his wife and their daughter\, the witnesses who signed the marriage record were Henry McCarty\, Josie McCarty and Harvey Edmonds.  Rationalizing this information\, Mullin and Rasch reasoned that the witnesses were in fact Catherine’s sons William and Joseph\, and that Harvey Edmonds was just an uninvolved passer-by or a church member who obliged as a witness.  And that set of “facts” was warmly welcomed into the historical calendar and has remained unchallenged for more than fifty years. \nUntil now. \nAll will be revealed on Tuesday\, November 11th at 2:00pm in the San Juan Mission at Lincoln\, NM when Frederick Nolan\, Susan Stevenson\, and Gary Jones\, the latter two descendants of Lincoln County pioneers\, present their new discoveries into the origins of Billy the Kid.  Seating is limited and first come first serve. \nFrederick Nolan is the author of many books about the Lincoln County War\, Billy the Kid\, and the American West\, including The Life and Death of John Henry Tunstall (2009)\, The Lincoln County War: A Documentary History (2009)\, and The West of Billy the Kid (1998). \n  \nLincoln Historic Site is located along US-380\, 12 miles east of Capitan at mile marker 98.  Historic Site museums are open daily from 8:30am to 4:30pm.  Admission is $5 for adults\, children 16 and under and veterans are free. Many early tattoo designs were copies of icons and paintings widely found in churches. Today\, Virgin Mary tattoos come in a wide array of styles and designs\, all of which are notable for their beautiful color composition\, artistic quality\, and dramatic effect. This documentary explores how sacred images have permeated the world of tattoos and what they mean and symbolize to the people who bare them. DESCRIPTION:Polly Chavez\, newspaper columnist\, santera\, and descendent of early residents of Lincoln\, will give two talks in Lincoln Historic Site’s Convento Museum on the cultural customs of Dia de los Muertos and explain the construction of the traditional altar (ofrenda) that is an important Dia de los Muertos custom. Children’s activities\, live music\, and altars in memory of some of the well-known former residents of Lincoln\, including one very famous young outlaw\, will be found throughout Old Lincoln Town. \nThe talks will take place at 12 pm and 2 pm.
